JOB DESCRIPTION
Organizational Setting
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supports the transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agri-food systems, for Better production, Better nutrition, Better environment and Better life, leaving no one behind.

The FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) based in Bangkok, Thailand coordinates the work of FAO across countries of 46 Members in the Asia and Pacific region. RAP is responsible for developing, overseeing, and implementing programmes and projects to address food security, nutrition, agriculture and rural development priorities. It develops and maintains relations with region-wide institutions and entities.

The Young Professional Officer will work under the technical guidance of the Senior Statistician of the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific of the Statistics Data and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators module. The Officer maintains regular contacts with the other relevant offices and divisions in FAO Headquarters and RAP for technical cooperation.

Reporting Lines
The Young Professional Officer reports to the FAO Assistant Director-General & Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific.

Technical Focus
Support in the preparation and implementation of the programme of work in the area of food and agricultural statistics in the Asia and Pacific region. Expand FAO’s normative work in the Asia and Pacific region on statistics, data and SDG indicators to further promote knowledge sharing and practices across the region, and delivery of technical capacity assistance to member countries on the implementation of international methodologies and guidelines to further progress towards the SDGs through better data and decisions.

Key Results
Research, technical analysis and project related services to support the delivery of assigned projects, products and services.

Key Functions
• Analyses relevant technical social, economic, environmental, and technology information, data and/or statistics for input in various documents;
• Maintains records and updates databases and web pages;
• Provides technical support to various projects;
• Collaborates in the development of training tools and materials and the organization of workshops/seminars etc.;
• Participates in the organization and follow-up of meetings, consultations and conferences, the production of required materials and the provision of information and assistance to partners.

Specific Functions
• Participates in the planning and implementation of initiatives and programs to facilitate FAO’s training and technical assistance activities to produce food and agricultural statistics in the region; including its ongoing work on agriculture censuses and surveys, compilation of the sustainable development goal monitoring indicators, and the use of cost-effective technologies;
• Participates in the research, data collection, validation, analysis and/or reporting of used for the planning and implementation of statistical activities;
• Assists with the production of technical reports and provides input in technical documents, regional publications and/or web pages;
• Supports in the organization, conduct and follow-up of meetings, consultations and conferences, in the development and/or production of required materials and the provision of information and assistance to partners;
• Supports in the response to requests from Sub-regional and Country Offices and provides technical and/or policy advice, assistance and solutions to these offices;
• Performs other duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
• Advanced university degree in statistics, economics or a related technical field;
• One year of relevant experience in the compilation and analysis of food and agricultural statistics in national or international organizations;
• Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills
• Extent of knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS);
• Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions is desirable;
• Extent and relevance of experience in processing and analysing micro data from national surveys, with special reference to household surveys;
• Proficiency and flexibility in using statistical software, especially R, SPSS, or similar, (preferably open-source) software is preferred;
• Demonstrated experience in drafting technical reports/documents in English and French is considered a strong asset;
• Extent and relevance of experience in implementation of technical assistance projects and training programmes.
